Who We Are

Founded in 1893, B'nai Israel is the third oldest, continuing independent congregation and the oldest conservative synagogue in Rhode Island.
The earliest roots of the congregation date to 1889, when it was known as the Lovers of Peace. In 1962, we dedicated our beautiful synagogue, designed by the internationally recognized synagogue architect Samuel Glazer.

Since 1917, our Hebrew School has maintained the highest standards and since the early 1900s our Chevra Kadisha and cemetery have attended to the needs of our departed.

We welcome interfaith families and our egalitarian services offer women an equal role.

As always, we remain dedicated to the growth and development of Jewish life
in the Northern Rhode Island- Southern Massachusetts area.

Our Cantor and our visiting rabbis lead members of our Congregation family in worship services and life-cycle ceremonies. We encourage all members of our Congregation to participate in services, which are typically small and personal
and held in our beautiful chapel. There are many opportunities for lay leadership, including torah reading and haftorah chanting, Shabbat services are held year-round on Friday nights and Saturday mornings. Childcare is provided during the High Holy Days and at various times throughout the year

Junior Congregation is available during the holidays and at various times throughout the year.

We also offer adult education in an inviting, un intimidating atmosphere, including classes on contemporary events, synagogue skills and Hebrew proficiency. Our curriculum is supplemented by special programs conducted by Jewish family services and the bureau of Jewish education.
